Finding the right dentist for you

Finding a dentist that is right for you is important because it can have a significant impact on your oral health; those who have a positive and trusting relationship with their dentist are much more likely to visit their dentist on a regular basis and subsequently they are likely to enjoy good standards of oral health.

There are a number of considerations that should be taken into account when choosing a dentist, even if it is for general treatment like a root canal; these include the expertise of the dentist in their dental job, their fees and the location of the clinic or surgery. It is important to choose a dentist that has the necessary skills and expertise to offer you the best possible standard of care; in the UK, dentist are regulated by the British Dental Association and should all be registered with the General Dental CouncilĀ  in order to be able to offer treatment to patients; if you come across a dentist that is not registered you should report them as this is illegal in the UK.

You also need to consider the cost of dental care when you are choosing a dentist; in this country, dental care is subsidised by the NHS but you may still wish to choose private dental care. Private care is often beneficial because there are usually no waiting lists, the clinics are usually more modern and there is a greater range of treatments on offer; all cosmetic treatments must be funded privately as they are non-essential and not supported by the NHS. The NHS provides a comprehensive range of services including dental check-ups, fillings, X-rays, crowns, dentures, dental bridges and root canal treatment; access to NHS dentists is improving across the country and most people are very satisfied with the service they receive. NHS care is considerably cheaper than private care.

If you suffer from dental anxiety or dental phobia, you may wish to see a dentist that has experience of dealing with nervous patients, many of which can be found in London dentists; this is a common problem and in extreme cases, it can prevent people from seeing their dentist and consequently they suffer with dental health problems.

The final consideration is the location of the dentist; most patients choose a dentist that is convenient for them and will enable them to see the dentist without having to travel long distances.
